Stansted's terminal — a glass-and-steel structure designed by Norman Foster — opened in 1991 and is still regarded as one of the more architecturally significant airport buildings in Europe. Heathrow, by contrast, has been quietly expanding since the 1940s into the world's busiest twin-runway airport. They sit on almost opposite sides of London, which is exactly why public transport between them means crossing the whole city. A direct transfer around the M25 avoids that entirely.
